James Cox, a Port Jackson deserter who had been turned over to Capt. Edwards at Coupang, Timor. He was under the charge of Lieutenant Thomas Hayward on the Hoornwey when he either jumped or fell or was pushed overboard in the Straits of Sunda. When the master shouted the order to launch a boat, Lieutenant Hayward is quoted as shouting, "No, No! Sail on! He may escape the gallows, but not the sharks!"
