Tobin's Providence Logbook Jul 28, 1793

H M Ship Providence from Jamaica towards [England – 1793]

Sunday July 28th

 1 pm: Fresh Gales and cloudy weather – People employed mending their cloaths

 3 pm: Foggy – Saw Sheerwaters & a Sun fish – Drizling rain – worked the pumps as usual – Saw a Murr [murre]

 6 pm: Made the Assistants Signal to go a head and lead, & when dark carry a Light – Tried for soundings with 160 fathom no ground

 9 pm: Out 2d Reefs Main & Mizen Topsails – unbent the old, & bent the best Jib

12 mid: Out 2d Reef Fore Top Sail & set Top Gallant Sails

 1 am: Fair weather

 2 am: Shortened Sail for the Assistant to regain her station

 4 am: At 4 Light breezes & cloudy weather – at 5 Out all Reefs, set Royals & the Larboard steering Sails – at 6 sounded in 105 fathom yellow sand, shells & hakes teeth. Saw a Gannet a Murr & Sheerwaters – Ditto Weather

 9 am: Served thick portable Soup gruel for breakfast Saw a strange Sail to the South steering to the Eastward – got up all wet cloaths to dry – Mustered in Divisions & performed divine Service – Served Sour Krout
