Tobin's Providence Logbook Jul 25, 1793

[H M S Providence from Jamaica towards] England – 1793

Thursday July 25th

 1 pm: Light breezes and clear weather

 3 pm: Unbent the old Foresail Fore, Main, & Mizen Topsails and bent new ones – hoisted out the cutter and sent her for Lieutenant Portlock – Saw Sheerwaters and numbers of Black fish (kind of porpoise) Exercised great guns, & small Arms – Worked the Pumps as usual – at 8 Lieutenant Portlock returned to the Assistant – In cutter – set the lower & Fore Top Mast Steering Sail – Moderate breeze & fine weather

12 mid: Gunners employed in the Magazine exasmining the Powder – at 1 Cloudy in Royals

 3 am: Set Royals & Top Gallant Steering Sails

 4 am: Fresh breezes and cloudy weather – Assistant, Antelope, Thomas, & Cleminson in company

 7 am: Served thick portable soup gruel for breakfast

 9 am: Ditto Weather – Up all Chests and Bags & washed the Gun, Orlop, and cockpit decks – Sailmakers repairing the old Fore Top Gallant Sail – Carpenters painting the Pinnace & cutter – Served kir as usual

12 noon: At Noon moderate breeze & fine weather with slight haze – Vessels in company as before Broached a Puncheon of Spruce beer
