Tobin's Providence Logbook Jul 17, 1793

[H M S Providence from Jamaica towards] England – 1793

Wednesday July 17th

 1 pm: Fresh Gale and cloudy weather with haze – Saw flying fish and some gulph weed – Sailmakers employed making a main top gallant steering Sail

 6 pm: Handed Top Gallant Sails

 7 pm: Worked the Pumps as usual

 8 pm: Cloudy weather

12 mid: Ditto Weather

 1 am: Set Top Gallant Sails

 4 am: Out 2d Reefs and set the Fore Top Mast Steering Sail – Thomas in company – Assistant, Antelope & Cleminson 5 or 6 Miles astern – served thick portable soup gruel for breakfast & Portable Soup in the Pease for dinner – Sour Krout as usual

 9 am: Hauled down the Fore Top Mast Steering Sail – Served Vinegar – cleaned below – Exercised great Guns and small Arms – Saw flying fish – Sailmakers as PM – Gunners making catridges Wads &c –

12 noon: At Noon fresh breeze & fair weather – broached a Puncheon of Spruce Beer – Vessels as before
