H M S Providence from Jamaica towards [England – 1793]

Remarks Tuesday July 16th

 1 pm: Fresh breezes and fair weather – Saw flying fish – Unbent the Top Gallant Staysail & bent a new one – Sailmakers repairing the Fore steering Sail – In Royals – Unbent the best & bent the old Mizen Top Sail – Exercised great Guns

 7 pm: In steering Sails & 1st Reefs Top Sails

 8 pm: Fresh Gale and clear weather

10 pm: Squally – handed Top Gallant Sails

12 mid: In 2d Reef Main & 2d & 3d Reef Fore Top Sail

 2 am: Cloudy with a heavy dew falling

 4 am: At day light out 3d Reef Fore Top Sail & set Top Gallant Sails – Assistant in company – Antelope, Thomas & Cleminson in sight a head

 7 am: Served thick portable Soup gruel for breakfast – Split the old Mizen Top Gallant Sail unbent it & bent the Best – up all Chests and Bags washed the Gun, Orlop and Cockpit decks – Exercised the great Guns Saw a Ship in the SE steering about WNW – hauled our colours – Ship did not answer them – Aired Ship with fires – At Noon fresh Gale with haze – Strange Ship not in sight
